INTERMEDIATE CLASSROOM TEACHERS
Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5
JOB DESCRIPTION
LOUISVILLE COLLEGIATE SCHOOL

REPORTS TO:
Head of Lower School

Louisville Collegiate School seeks Upper Elementary classroom teachers with strong backgrounds in teaching both the Mathematics and Language Arts. We are looking for educators who strive to teach their students to think analytically in every discipline, and to challenge their students to innovate as they solve problems.

Classroom teachers should give students opportunities to think and make an effort to connect one subject area to others, differentiating instruction as needed.

The ideal candidate possesses both the creativity and intellect to communicate sophisticated math concepts using a variety of tools and methods ranging from various manipulatives (both concrete and virtual) to innovative projects to traditional drill practice. In mathematics, the teacher should be able to lay a firm foundation of concepts while constantly asking students to constantly use their math skills to attack problems.

A candidate should feel comfortable teaching all the Language Arts, with primary emphasis on writing and reading. The candidate should be well versed in current literacy research and methods, able to conduct writing workshops, lead inquiry discussions about books and history topics, and teach 21st century research methods. The Upper Elementary teacher should emphasize that reading and writing are the tools that help children discover what they want to know and to communicate this information to a wide variety of audiences. While teaching humanities, the classroom teacher should stress that this subject helps sharpen critical thinking skills and deepen students abilities to evaluate, synthesize and analyze.

An Upper Elementary classroom teacher will be in frequent communication with parents, working as a team to create an environment in which a child can flourish. The teacher will write narrative comments, along with letter grades four times a year, clearly summarizing a student’s strengths and weaknesses. As part of a grade level team, the teacher will communicate frequently with colleagues to discuss appropriate curriculum to ensure the strongest program possible.
