Time . . . for students to create,
explore, experiment.
What separates the lower school program
from many others is the amount of time students are exposed
to art. Each lower school child spends 2 hours per week in
a visual art class and 2 hours per week in music class-almost
unprecedented by today's standards.
Whether its ceramics,
drawing, painting, an introduction to art history (4th
grade), or an introduction to theater (5th grade), students
are encouraged to tap their inner Picassos.
Special projects
range from "In Monet's Garden," where students
take easels into the garden to paint (just like Monet!) to
"Blast from the Past," an exploratory look the oldest
piece of art to the most contemporary at the J.B. Speed Art
Museum, to a stone chiseling demonstration which gives them
an appreciation of the difficulty of sculpting.
