In
2008, Louisville Collegiate School introduced
a Junior Kindergarten program to its campus.
Having already been a provider of K–12
education in the Louisville, Kentucky area since 1915,
Collegiate’s decision to add a full-fledged early
childhood program came easily.
The Junior Kindergarten program is
located on our campus at 2465 Glenmary Avenue, in a
renovated home that provides a nurturing environment,
built and furnished solely for the development and education
of our junior kindergarteners.
Adjacent to the building is a playground
that the program shares with the Kindergarten grades
of the school. Together they interact in the play space,
and are able to ride tricycles along a path that runs
around the playground.
Everything about our Junior Kindergarten
is designed to welcome young minds to a nurturing place
of social and academic exploration
The curriculum is based on the High
Scope approach. High Scope’s active learning approach
follows a daily routine that strikes a balance between
structure and free choice. This “Plan-Do-Review”
process gives children the opportunity to create and
express their intentions, to generate their own learning
experiences and to reflect on those experiences.
Other elements of the day include small
group activities that focus on an area of need. Examples
of such activities include math, language, science,
or fine motor, large group activities, world language,
journal time, gross motor activities, lunch, and quiet
time.
Through a daily routine of wonder,
experiment, and group exploration, students gain self-esteem,
confidence and independence. The Junior Kindergarten
program also has access to Collegiate’s science,
library, technology, and physical education facilities.
