A defining part of the Collegiate Middle
School Experience is our Interim.
Students participate in an Interim that is
a multi-day,
out-of-the-classroom unit that features adventure and cultural
travel.
The 2005 Interim
allowed 6th-graders to participate in a pirate theme
that divided them into crews; 7th-graders studied cultural
anthropology and created
their own hunter-gatherer groups; and 8th-graders did service
learning in the community and took a trip earlier in the school
year to North Carolina.
In order to prepare students to be "responsible
citizens of a global society," service learning plays
a major role at Collegiate. Beginning in Middle School, students
perform community service work at several
non-profit agencies throughout Greater Louisville.
Our 8th-graders
volunteered at Atkinson Elementary School, Louisville
Diversified Services, Four Courts Senior Center, Byck Elementary
School, the Neighborhood House, the Wayside Christian Mission
and the Wesley House Community Services.
Our 7th-grade
students studied cultural anthropology in English class
to give context to their reading of “The Song of the
Molimo,” a historicalnovel that features an African
Pygmy. During their Interim, they applied what they learned
by creating their own hunter-gatherer groups.
Their
tribe names were Maori (Ms. Kemble), Kayapo (Ms. Mulligan),
Yanomamo (Ms. Hawbaker) and Huli (Mr. Herzfeld). Students
created a culture that logically fit into the environment
they selected, such as rain forest, desert, or Arctic.
To kick off our interim, Collegiate parents
Harlina and Yaya Diallo taught students about African drumming
and dance. Students also played Anthropology Jeopardy and
gave presentations in the auditorium.
The 6th grade
students were divided into pirate crews and had to
accomplish a number of tasks. They created accurate treasure
maps, researched historical pirates, wrote short stories,
and created a skit about their crew’s adventures. They
also came up with costumes, flags, and pirate names for themselves.
