Service Learning

 

 

In order to prepare students to be "responsible citizens of a global society," service learning plays a major role at Collegiate.

Beginning in Middle School, students perform community service work at several non-profit agencies throughout Greater Louisville. In the Upper School, community service becomes an even more integral part of the program, as students are required increase their service.

Agencies Work Description

Atkinson Elementary School

Helping out in various classrooms, the library or the computer lab. You may help with a PE class, grade papers or work with Special Ed children
Louisville Diversified Services You will be sent to one of two places and work with mentally and physically handicap adults. The work will vary depending on which place you are sent, anything from making cookies and planting flowers to helping with arts and crafts.
Four Courts You will interact with elderly adults. Reading to them, playing the piano, helping the staff with and event, or whatever they need that day.
Byck Elementary School Helping out in various classrooms, the library or the computer lab. You may help with a PE class, grade papers or work with Special Ed children.
Ronald McDonald House Helping clean and organize the kitchen. Dusting and vacuuming. If the weather is nice, working outside.
Lukemia/ Lymphoma Society Stuffing envelops, data entry and other office duties. Working on things for an upcoming event.
Wesley Community House- Playing with the children in the day care. Helping sanitize toys and clean up the children's area.
Louisville Zoo Working in either the Medizoo or the commissary. Whatever tasks they need taken care of, limited interaction with the animals due to lack of time to get shots. Must be 13 years old at time of service learning.
Boys and Girls Club You may go to different locations each week. The first week you will be helping them clean up after some new renovations. There will be a chance to work both inside and out.
Neighborhood House If you sign up for Byck or Atkinson you will go to this agency on the middle Friday. This place is for both kids and seniors and you will be helping out in both departments.
Volunteers of America A homeless shelter. You will help organize donations, work with kids, serve food in the food line and get to do some fall decorating.
