Sportsmanship & Team Philosophy

Collegiate strives to instill in our student athletes a sense of fair play, honor, and pride. Our "no-cut" policy and "team selection" process allow for participation of all athletes at the most appropriate level. Athletics in Collegiate's Middle School are fundamental to many students' educational experience and should engage the interests and skills of each individual.

In teaching physical training, skills, team play, competition, fun, character, leadership, and school spirit, Collegiate seeks excellence and participation of students in shared athletic pursuits.

We provide instruction in sportsmanship; encourage appropriate spectator behavior and promote positive support; sponsor team-bonding activities; celebrate multi-season interscholastic athletes; and appropriately publicize the program.

We have 35 teams for our 12 sports offered in the Middle School

Team Philosophies and Participation in Games Policies

Individual Sports
With the exception of Blue/Gold Tennis (4-8), and MS Track (6-8), individual sports allow Middle School students in grades 7 and 8 to tryout for Junior Varsity and Varsity KHSAA approved (high school) sports. For JV and Varsity sports, a Team Selection process is used, when necessary, to determine Middle School participants. Teams generally practice five times per week. Blue/Gold Tennis (4-8), and MS Track (6-8) provide opportunities for participation for all athletes.

Middle School Team Sports

  • Gold & Zons: This is the most competitive level. A Team Selection process is used to determine participants. In almost all appropriate situations, the team tries to win using the best athletes available. Decisions regarding Participation in Games are made in the context of an entire season and not for each game. Teams generally practice four times per week.
  • Blue & Amas: These teams are for developing athletes who have demonstrated a strong commitment to a sport. Emphasis is placed on individual skill development in a team situation and in a game context. In certain sports, a Team Selection process is used. Decisions regarding Participation in Games are made in the context of an entire season and not for each game, though most athletes should expect some playing time in each game. Teams generally practice four times per week.
  • White: This level offers competitive opportunities for athletes, but specifically focuses on skills development. Participation in Games is nearly equal for all athletes for every game. Teams generally practice three or four times per week.
  • Sixth: These teams serve 6th-grade students only. These teams introduce athletes to interscholastic competition. A Team Selection process is used for basketball only. Participation in Games is nearly equal for all athletes for every game. Teams generally practice three times per week. Middle School athletes in grades 7 and 8 are permitted to play, by invitation of the Athletic Director, on KHSAA approved Junior Varsity and Varsity team sports.
