6th Grade

6th Grade History: Foundations of Western Civilization
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the people, events, and cultures that shaped Western Civilization, and to develop the analytical and study skills necessary for success in future academic studies. Foundations of Western Civilization is taught using a thematic approach intended to encourage students’ development from concrete to abstract thinking. Students are encouraged to use factual information to draw conclusions about and make connections between the civilizations being examined.

Topics include:

  • Geography
  • Ancient Greece
  • Ancient Roman Republic and Empire
  • Western World Religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam
  • Middle Ages
  • Rise of Monarchies
  • Renaissance & Reformation
  • The Age of Discovery

6th Grade Humanities: Exploring the Classics
The objective of Exploring the Classics is to enrich students’ understanding of the core curriculum through integrated learning and to emphasize basic sixth grade skills. Exploring the Classics, or ETC, is a team taught class that provides time each week for coordinated inquiry-based hands-on learning and features a unique five to one student-teacher ratio.

Projects include:

  • Mythology of Ancient Greece and Rome
    – Sequencing of Events
    – Characterization and point of view
  • Great Greeks guided research project
  • Western World Religions Banners
  • Historical Fiction Blogging
  • The Living Museum

Sixth grade History is taught in a cross-curricular manner with sixth grade English and Latin classes. In English, students read young adult fiction set in time periods that coincide with those studied in History. In Latin, students continue to explore Roman language and culture.

7th Grade

  • United States history to present
