Curriculum

The Upper School aims to promote individual responsibility through a robust curriculum that provides academic electives, activity options, leadership opportunities, and community service choices. We value the individual needs and talents of the students as they pursue educational goals, while we recognize the importance of developing an interdependent learning community. Thus, we encourage students and their families to make significant choices within the framework of our rigorous college preparatory program.

The faculty and administration have designed the scope and sequence of the upper school curriculum to maximize student learning. Courses in every department offer opportunities for students to apply what they have learned outside of the classroom setting.

In order for our graduates to become effective "problem solvers" they must have practice at the skill of applying information taken from one context or discipline to another. Therefore, we recognize not only the significance of individual courses but also the coherence and quality of the student’s entire course of study.

Families should feel free to draw on the experience and knowledge of department heads, academic advisors, and counselors. Each student's involvement in the life of the school and the community -- in the area of performing arts, on athletic teams, in a host of clubs and activities, and in community service -- represent a significant part of the educational experience.

Though a course listed might not be offered due to limited interest in a particular year, the curriculum provides tremendous opportunities for our students who continue to reap the benefits of a small school.
