Chinese
Chinese I: Full year (1 unit of credit)
Chinese I is an introductory course in Mandarin Chinese with
emphasis on the development of the four critical skills: reading,
writing, speaking and listening. Because Chinese is a tonal
language, accurate pronunciation is stressed. Memorizing Chinese
characters is also emphasized. Role-play, learning games,
and various projects are added to bring energy to the classroom.
Chinese history and geography are also introduced. The student’s
experience is enriched by cultural activities including calligraphy,
customs, food, folklore and music. Course enrollment is open
to all students in grades 8-12.
Chinese II: Full year (1 unit of credit)
A continuation of the study of Mandarin Chinese to be offered
to students in grades 9-12 during the 2007-2008 school year.
French
French I: First year French (1 unit of
credit)
This course is an introduction to essential French grammar,
vocabulary, pronunciation and culture. Students will demonstrate
their ability to function at a basic level in the language
in speaking, writing and reading through skits, simple conversations,
listening activities, short compositions and passages. Students
will practice verbal skills by talking about themselves, their
families, friends, sports, food, likes and dislikes, everyday
life, school, shopping, numbers and the weather. Students
will also learn about the French-speaking world through a
yearlong project. This course WILL NOT be offered during
the 2004-05 school year.
French II: Second Year French (1 unit
of credit)
This second year course will help students expand their knowledge
of vocabulary and grammar though language acquisition activities
in order to speak and write in a more sophisticated manner.
A variety of in-class activities such as paired conversations;
reading, skits, projects, presentations and listening activities
will allow students to improve their skills in speaking, listening,
reading and writing. Students also learn about life in France
and French-speaking countries. Prerequisite: Successful
completion of French I or equivalent.
French III: Third Year French (1 unit
of credit)
This third year course emphasizes the application of skills
acquired in previous years' study of French. Students read,
write and discuss at a more advanced level using a variety
of authentic texts. Language acquisition activities allow
students to expand their vocabulary and focus on from in writing
and speaking. Students also study the history of France. Prerequisite:
Successful completion of French II or equivalent.
French IV or AP French Language: Fourth
Year French (1 unit of credit)
The goal of this course is to prepare students for college-level
French. Students read, write and discuss at a more sophisticated
level using a variety of original source materials such as
novels, newspapers and magazines. Students explore topics
such as immigration, movies and television, traveling, traditions
and customs, and other themes from real-life experiences.
Skills such as speaking, writing, reading and listening are
reinforced through a variety of in-class activities, grammar
lessons, and regular homework, including lengthy compositions.
Students who are especially motivated and talented in French
may be invited by the teacher to prepare for the AP French
Language Examination. Prerequisite: Successful completion
of French III or equivalent.
French V or AP French Literature: Fifth
Year French (1 unit of credit)
This course prepares students to take the AP Literature Exam
in French. A selection of 3 plays, 3 novels and 20 poems,
representing the 16th-20th centuries in Francophone literature,
make up the content of this course (all works studied are
from the required reading list for the AP examination). Students
read, discuss and write in French daily. Grammar and vocabulary
review is minimal. Students are expected to do significant
reading and research on their own in order to prepare for
the AP Examination in May. Prerequisite: Students admitted
to this course must earn at least a B average in French IV
and permission of the instructor.
German
German I: First Year German (1 unit of
credit)
This is an introductory course to German with emphasis on
acquisition of vocabulary and communicative skills. Basic
grammatical concepts are included. The culture, geography,
daily life and customs of the four German speaking countries
are emphasized. Note: This course WILL NOT be offered in
2004-05.
German II: Second Year German (1 unit
of credit)
This class is a continuation of German 8 and German I with
an emphasis on oral and written communication. The students
are expected, as much as possible, to use German for all communication
in the classroom. Grammatical concepts will be reviewed and
expanded. Daily life and customs of the four German speaking
countries are emphasized. Prerequisite: Successful
completion of German 8 at LCS, German I, or equivalent.
German III: Third Year German (1 unit
of credit)
This class reviews and refines grammar from the level II German
course. Vocabulary is further expanded. Reading comprehension
skills are taught through the introduction of literature in
the form of short stories. Grammatical concepts are presented,
highlighted and reviewed as they appear in the reading selections.
Emphasis is placed on writing skills. Students study in-depth
the culture and history of the German speaking countries.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of German II or
equivalent.
German IV: Fourth Year German (1 unit of credit)
This course introduces literature and other interesting and
challenging materials from the German speaking countries while
reviewing and refining the students' knowledge of basic language
skills. The emphasis of this course is on communication, concentrating
on issues that are of current interest. Students are encouraged
to express themselves orally and to use more complex grammar
in their essay writing. At the end of this year the students
should have the skills and knowledge to discuss history, politics,
social issues and some literature. Prerequisite: Successful
completion of German III or equivalent.
German V or AP German Language: Fifth
Year German (1 unit of credit)
The major emphasis of this course is to strengthen the students'
ability to understand literary works, to write at a more sophisticated
level and to improve fluency. Students will read a variety
of authentic works by German, Austrian and Swiss authors.
Texts are analyzed for writing style and used as a basis for
imitative writing as well as for vocabulary development. German
newspapers are used for in-depth study of current events and
the study of German culture from the European perspective.
Students are exposed to different methods of testing used
on the AP exam and refine their test-taking skills. Prerequisite:
Students admitted to this course must earn at least a B average
in German IV and permission of the instructor.
Spanish
Spanish I: First Year Spanish (1 unit
of credit)
This course is an introduction to the language with an emphasis
on communicative skills. Vocabulary and grammar are taught
in systematically organized chapters in which students learn
to communicate about their own life and how to interact with
Spanish cultures. This course will be offered during the
2004-2005 school year.
Spanish II: Second Year Spanish (1 unit of credit)
This course emphasizes on communication and expression. Again,
students study the culture and geography of the Spanish-speaking
world. Reading and speaking skills are stressed in preparation
for Spanish III. Prerequisite: Successful completion
of Spanish 8 at LCS, Spanish I, or equivalent.
Spanish III: Third Year Spanish (1 unit
of credit)
This course is a continuation of the study of the skills acquired
in previous courses with an emphasis on speaking. Students
study in-depth the culture, literature and art of the Spanish
speaking world. Students also review the grammar learned in
previous years and learn more complex grammatical structures.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish II or
equivalent.
Spanish IV: Fourth Year Spanish (1 unit
of credit)
In this course, students refine their basic skills of speaking,
listening, reading and writing. Using the literary works of
the text, the students are exposed to and discuss topics such
as the role of men and women in society, death, political
movements, and education. Prerequisite: Successful
completion of Spanish III or equivalent.
Spanish V or AP Spanish Language: Fifth
Year Spanish (1 unit of credit)
This course is designed to strengthen the students' ability
to read and discuss literary works, and to write at a more
sophisticated syntactic level. Advanced grammar, and further
development of speaking and listening skills are essential
components of this course. Class discussions based on cultural
aspects of Spanish-speaking countries help students increase
their fluency and also to learn more in depth about the cultural
and literary heritage of Spanish and Latin America. Prerequisite:
Students admitted to this course must earn at least a B average
in Spanish IV and permission of the instructor.
