The Upper
School aims to promote individual responsibility through
a robust curriculum
that provides a core
academic foundation enriched through academic electives,
activity options, leadership opportunities, and community
service choices.
We value the individual needs and talents
of the students as they pursue educational goals. Additionally,
we recognize the importance of developing an interdependent
learning community. We encourage students and their
families to make choices within the framework of our
college preparatory program.
Though a course listed might not be
offered due to limited interest in a particular year,
the curriculum provides tremendous opportunities for
our students who continue to experience the benefits
of a small school.
ADVANCED COURSE
INFORMATION
Why Advanced Courses?
- Advanced courses provide
the opportunity to do college level work and perhaps
obtain college level credit.
- Students who enjoy a subject area
can develop a passion for a particular
subject area though upper level work.
- The correct selection of Advanced
Courses may improve college acceptances by increasing
the strength of a transcript. Please discuss your
college expectations with the College Counseling Office
prior to making course selections.
General
Advanced Course Guidelines and Expectations
- Students spend at least 50% more
time on Advanced Courses so care must be taken to
balance course load with extracurricular activities.
- The curriculum and standards for
Advanced Courses are influenced by the College Board,
an organization that runs the Advanced Placement program.
- All students who sign up for Advanced
Courses must take the corresponding Advanced Placement
exam in May.
- Each Advanced Placement Exam requires
a financial commitment of approximately $100.
- Students wishing to take more than
three advanced courses must obtain permission from
the Head of Upper School.
- Students requesting advanced courses
must complete a separate Advanced Course Request Form.
This form must be signed by the student’s parent
or guardian and the teacher of the Advanced Course.
