Callie Virginia Smith Granade '68
Callie
Virginia (Ginny) Granade is a veteran prosecutor whose expertise
in the courtroom has earned her recognition by the President
of the United States and a place in history.
In August 2001, President George W. Bush nominated Ginny as
a United States District Judge in the Southern District of
Alabama.
After a hearing before the Senate Judiciary
Committee, and unanimous roll-call confirmation by the United
States Senate, she was sworn in on February 20, 2002 as the
first woman to sit on this U.S. district bench. Twenty-five
years earlier, Ginny became the first female prosecutor in
Mobile, Alabama, and she is now Alabama's only female Fellow
of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
In addition to her history-making career,
Ginny is active in service work to the courts as well as in
volunteer work at her sons' school and at her church.
