Mary Lee Wood '50
Described
as "the best of the best" by an award winning physician
and colleague, Mary Lee Wood was a trailblazer in medical
research. With intelligence, quiet dignity, and resolve, she
achieved success in what was at the time a male-dominated
field.
Her distinguished career specializing in
organ transplantation research eventually led her to Boston,
where she worked for two research teams. In 1976 she was named
Woman of Achievement by the Massachusetts Federation of Business
and Professional Women.
In addition to working at her "day
job," from 1978 to 1996 she served as editor of Transplantation
magazine. She was the first American woman to edit a major
scientific journal. Another first for Mary came when she was
elected an officer of the Transplantation Society. In 1993
she was listed in Who's Who in America in Science. And, she
has written more than 90 articles for various medical journals.
