Earlier this month, three alumni sporting events brought alums and current Collegiate students together to battle each other and the heat.

The week started on Monday, Aug. 6 with the inaugural Alumni Tennis Tournament at Bellarmine University. More than 30 alums and students played their way through the tournament in the hot August heat. At the end of the event, alums Matthew Thurman '06, who is in his sophomore year at McGill University, and Allen Dodd '92 defeated Collegiate seniors Elizabeth Stege and Tessa White in the final. On Tuesday, Aug. 7, the focus turned to field hockey and soccer at Collegiate's Champions Trace Fields. Numerous former Titan soccer players scrimmaged the Boys Varsity Soccer team, while our Amazon field hockey alums and current players battled on a nearby field.

The student Amazons beat the alumnae field hockey team, while the alumni soccer squad beat the boys soccer team.

The 35th-Annual Field Hockey Apple Tournament recently honored the two teams in the first Apple Tournament back in 1973. The Collegiate Amazons were defeated by the KCD Bearcats 1-0 in that historic game.


Twelve Amazons from the 1973 game attended the Apple Tournament during a Friday night semifinal game between Ballard and Collegiate and were recognized during half time. They were: Becky Kinnaird Mattingly ’74, Laurie Camp Vieth ’76, Merrell Wall Grant ’74, Anne Steinbock ’74, Olivia (Weezie) Brown McCleary ’74, Kathie O’Callaghan ’74, Holly Gray ’76, Laura Settles Horsey ’74, Susan Castleman Clare ’76, Lucy Jones Langman’76, Michele Lansing Flowers ’74, and SuSu Dishman Dougherty ’74. The Collegiate Alumni Association Board held a reception on Tuesday, Aug. 14 on campus for a meet-and-great opportunity for members and new board members.

The 20-plus attendees gathered in the Development Office on Glenmary Avenue to discuss the 2007-2008 school year, the alumni board and their fond memories at Collegiate.

New members include Nirmesh Agrawal ’98, Austin Thompson Anderton ’97, Brian D. Cook ’94 and Malcolm Walton Kelly ’48.
