    macbeth

On Thursday, March 13 Mrs. Wabrek's 4th Grade class performed Shakespeare's Macbeth in The Black Box Theatre. Having studied British monarchy as part of their history curriculum, Macbeth became the perfect choice for a performance, as it allowed children to exprience the murky life of a monarch. Students impressed their audience with mind boggling memorization of lines, thorough understanding of Shakespearean language and complex portrayal of characters.

Journalists and Film Directors Visit Collegiate
    meeting resistance

Molly Bingham and Steve Connors, journalists and directors of the film "Meeting Resistance" spoke to our Upper School students on Thursday, March 13. The pair discussed their experiences while living in Iraq and their interactions with the Iraqi people while they were preparing their film in 2003.

Their film "Meeting Resistance" is a "daring, eye- opening film provides unique insight into the personal narratives of people involved in the resistance exploding myth after myth about the war in Iraq and the Iraqis who participate." More information about the film, Molly Bingham and Steve Connors can be found at www.meetingresistance.com.

    library entrance

Now that spring has officially arrived, the Library Media Center is blossoming with activity.

    * The Spring Book Fair is coming the week before Spring Break, March 31-April 3. Book Fair hours are Monday-Wednesday 7:45 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and Thursday, 7:45 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. Here's an opportunity to buy excellent titles for your child, honor a teacher, purchase gifts AND support our LCS Library. It will be held in the auditorium and is being chaired by Debbie Hyman. We hope to have titles by visiting authors Carol Weston and Patricia Polacco available.

    * The well known, beloved childrens author and illustrator Patricia Polacco will be here on Thursday, May 8 to speak to all the Lower School students! As you probably know, she has many beautiful picture books. Teachers will be reading some favorites written by her so their students will be prepared.

    * The Middle School and the Library Media Center are pleased to host Carol Weston, author of books aimed at fifth-graders through teenagers on Friday, April 25. She will be talking to fifth- eighth grade girls and presenting writing workshops to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students.

Ms. Weston has written the books, "For Girls Only," "Girltalk," "The Diary of Melanie Martin," and also writes a column called "Dear Carol" for the magazine Girls Life. One newspaper quote about her is "A little G-rated advice can go a long way to help young girls navigate an R-rated world."

    Students Learn From Professional Artisan
    JD School

Collegiate students were able to observe first-hand professional artisan, J.D. Schall in action. Schall worked with Visual Art students as a part of their art careers research work and exposure. While at Collegiate, Schall demonstrated the potters wheel and the techniques that are used when creating various pieces.

J.D. is a production potter whose work has been shown at the Kentucky Museum of Arts & Craft, St. James Art Show and at other regional shows. Prior to his move to Louisville five years ago, J.D. served as the main potter for Bates Cason Inc, producing a high end lamp line, and before that worked in Wisconsin.

    Collegiate Celebrates Pi Day
    Pi Day

On March 14, many Collegiate math students celebrated Pi Day. Pi Day, a celebration of the number 3.14159 (and so on for all eternity), is held on March 14 (3-14) each year. Molly Prince's eighth-grade geometry class met Mrs. Briggs's first graders and Mrs. Wabrek's fourth graders to calculate Pi. Working in teams of 3, students went on a circle quest, armed with measuring tapes, to measure the circumference and diameter of various circles around Collegiate. They returned to the classroom, to calculate Pi (circumference divided by diameter) and to eat...pie.

    Junior Flamenco Dancer
    scarlett perleberg-owen

Scarlett Perleberg-Owen, "began studying flamenco in 2006 with Mariya Tarakanova and since then has attended New Mexio Flamenco Festival 2007 where she has studied with Vero La India. Natural grace, as well as discipline and dedication to the art form, have propelled Scarlett quickly in her training and she made her flamenco debut at the World Fest on the Belvedere in September of 2007."

    Camp of the Week:

One person's trash is another person's treasure. That is the rallying cry of the junkyard artist! Dive into treasure trove recyclables, lost objects, and strange leftovers to create your own masterpiece. Students will examine several visionary artists (Romare Beardon, Alexander Calder, and others) and plan a project based on strange raw materials and a sprinkling of their own imagination. Some may discover within themselves a paper mache artist, or one who sculpts with wire, nuts and bolts, while others may create broken tile mosaics. Our week will end with a gallery show, featuring student's favorite piece from the week. The sky's the limit when you are a junkyard artist! Instructor: Chelle Wabrek, Collegiate Fourth-Grade Teacher
