Winners of Collegiate Kindergarten Derby Announced
“Dennis of Cork” earns blanket
of roses
LOUISVILLE, KY. – Students riding Derby
horses “Denis of Cork,” “Pyro,” and
“Monba” won Louisville Collegiate’s 47th
Annual Kindergarten Derby today, an event whose winners always
seem to finish in the top three at the Derby held two days
later.
Sophia
Baser, who rode Denis of Cork, was crowned the 2008 winner
of the race that involves the school’s 5- and 6-year
old “jockeys” competing with their self-decorated
hobbyhorses, clad in matching silks. Children bearing the
name of actual Derby contenders raced around a makeshift track,
in hopes of winning the “blanket of roses” created
by students. Grades first through fifth participated in their
own Pegasus Parade, themed “A World of Possibilities.”
Senior boys escorted the Derby Festival Queen
and her court to the event that featured a bugler playing
the “Call to the Post,” and last year’s
Kindergarten Derby winner.
Established in 1915, Louisville Collegiate
School is a co-ed college-preparatory independent school for
students from JK through 12th grade.
