Collegiate to honor alumna Elizabeth ‘Bunch’
Sanders Griffin
Student athletes to pay tribute to founding
Amazon at gates of Cave Hill Cemetery
LOUISVILLE, KY. – Louisville Collegiate
School field hockey Amazons will pay tribute to the late Elizabeth
“Bunch” Sanders Griffin tomorrow afternoon at
the gates of Cave Hill Cemetery. Griffin, who graduated from
Collegiate in 1937, passed away on Tuesday. She was 88. Her
funeral is 11 a.m. tomorrow at Second Presbyterian Church
with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery.
Griffin was a founding member of Collegiate’s
historical Amazon field hockey team back in 1933. The Amazons
were created in the early 1930s by a group of Collegiate students
after the school’s founder, Virginia Perrin Speed, forbid
the players from continuing to play area high schools as an
independent team off campus after school.
Mrs. Speed only allowed students to play
field hockey on the school’s campus, dividing the girls
into two teams, blue and gold, to compete against one another
during the school day. The girls went against Mrs. Speed’s
directive and continued to compete against area high school
teams as an independent squad but with a new name –
the Amazons. The school eventually took the “Amazon”
as its official mascot in the 1960s.
Since that time, Collegiate’s Amazon
field hockey team has racked up 11 State Field Hockey Championships.
Griffin attended every Collegiate field hockey game and became
the girls’ most devoted fan over the years.
Collegiate Field Hockey Coach Wendy Martin
and her team will be dressed in their Amazon uniforms when
they pay tribute to Griffin at the gates of Cave Hill Cemetery,
which is located across the street from Collegiate’s
campus on Grinstead Drive.
Established in 1915, Louisville Collegiate
School is a co-ed college-preparatory independent school for
students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
